This panel is 24 inches by 20 inches. The Puffin is 8 inches long from beak to tail. And he comes out of the panel 5 inches. The rock ledge he’s standing on comes out of the panel 3½ inches and it’s 11 inches long. Both the bird and the ledge are carved out of select Basswood. Great care was taken in carving and painting the detail in this realistic Puffin.

To create a hand carved ledge with a natural look a lot of detail was put into each of the individual rocks. Nooks, crannies, splits, and the green moss on the rocks make them look very realistic. They are so realistic it’s hard to keep from reaching out and touching them.

The painting is a rendering of the Puffins breeding grounds. In the middle ground is a ledge with nesting birds in and around their borrows. The bare ledges are landing strips for incoming birds. The rough water is filled with puffins in all different poses. And the background is perfectly accented with an old brick lighthouse.
